Billy Singleton

1936-2017

Services for Billy Dan Singleton were held Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at Haven of Memories in Canton.

He was born in Canton on March 15, 1936, to parents Joe Frank Singleton and Kassie Singleton.

He passed away on March 18, 2017 in Tyler.

He was raised in Canton and attended Canton schools. He was employed by the Murrey Motor Company in Wills Point for some 38 years.

He lived a full life even though he faced many obstacles. His parents worked hard for him to have the medical care and education available to him. His father preceded him in 1979. He worked for Murrey Motors for some 38 years and grew to have a second family there. He worked for Roland Murrey for many years and after Roland’s death continued working with his second family for Mark Murrey until his retirement.

During retirement, he enjoyed going to First Monday searching for treasures, riding around in his pickup and spending time with his family, including his many nieces and nephews. He also enjoyed spending weekends in his recliner watching western movies with his mother. He faithfully and lovingly cared for his mother until her death. Many other people helped him along the way and earned a special place in his heart, including his friend, Chester Hall.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, Mike Simmons.

He is survived by two sisters, Emma Lee Simmons of Canton and Joann Deckard of Friendswood. He is survived by nieces and nephews, Dianne and Joe Rivera, Brenda Simmons, Eddie and Thao Deckard, Tommy and Pam Simmons, and Frank and Brenda Simmons, 11 great nieces and nephews, 13 great-great nieces and nephews; and two great-great-great nieces.

Carolus Devisscher

Carolus “Corky” Devisscher died on March 18, 2017 after a lengthy stay in a Tyler hospital due to an ongoing illness.
He was born in Pennsylvania on Dec. 20, 1948 to Charles and Gertrude Devisscher. He grew up in New Jersey and served in the United States Navy. He served aboard the flagship Constellation CV-64 off the coast of Vietnam.
He married Donna Mahoney of Runnemede, N.J. They had two precious daughters and lived for some time in Colorado.
He moved to Texas in 1998. He worked in construction all of his adult life and many East Texas homes and buildings still reflect his signature of excellence.
He became ill in December of 2016, entered East Texas Medical Center at the end of the year, and has now entered Heaven where he looked forward to seeing his Savior, Jesus Christ.
He is survived by both of his daughters, Jennifer and Christina Devisscher, both of whom still reside in Colorado; his grandson, Derek Rowbotham of Denver, Colo.,  a sister, Trudy Sine of Barrington, N.J. and two brothers and their wives, David and Blenda Devisscher of Fincastle and Roy and Sandy Devisscher of Lindale; nephews and their wives, David and Laura Devisscher of Springfield, Ga., Jess and LaTonia Devisscher of Van and Daniel and Mayra Devisscher of Lindale; his niece and her husband, Ladonna and Daniel Hafen of Whitefish, Mont.; many great-nephews and great-nieces; his dearest friend, Lillian Clark, and many others who loved him and will miss him.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 30 at Community Christian Fellowship, 15704 Hwy. 110 North, Lindale, with Rev. Mike Calhoun officiating.

Doylene Fuller

Services for Doylene (Doye) Fuller, 72, of Canton, were held Saturday, March 25, 2017, at Eubank Funeral Home, Canton, with Bro. Ronnie Daniell officiating.  Interment followed in Haven of Memories. 

Mrs. Fuller passed away March 21, 2017, at her home in Canton.  She was born Jan. 8, 1945, to the late Doyle Alvin Davis and Joelene Hutton Davis Neel.

She was raised by her grandmother, Addie Pearl Hutton, in Collinsville until her death in 1958.  Afterward, she lived in the Hurst-Euless area with her mom.  She married Jim on April 6, 1967 and in 1971 moved to Myrtle Springs and opened Fuller's Garage and Radiator Service, now known as Fuller's Towing & Recovery.

She retired in 2005 from Vaught Aircraft in Grand Prairie where she worked for 30 years in Quality Control.

She was a member of the Eastern Star Canton Chapter #667 although she did more work for the Masons than Eastern Star.  She also devoted many hours of work to the City of Canton, Chamber of Commerce and C.E.D.C. She and her husband, Jim, also worked many hours promoting and putting on Bluegrass and Western Swing Festivals in Canton, not only for the love of the music, but in hopes that people in the community of Canton would have another window of opportunity to add to their income other than by First Monday.  She also had the hope her efforts would help in making a better city and community for all to be proud of and enjoy. 

She is preceded in death by her daughter, Wanda Polley, of Myrtle Springs.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Jim Fuller; son, David Waldner of Canton; five added children, Jimmy Fuller of Canton, Jay Fuller of Canton, Jana Condor of Fort Worth, Joe Fuller of Fort Worth, and Jack Fuller of Fort Worth; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Jessie Williams

Services for Jessie Williams, 83, of Fruitvale, were held Monday, March 13, 2017, at Bartley Funeral Home, with Bro. Eddie Paul Stanley officiating. Interment followed at Grove Hill Memorial Park, Dallas.

Mr. Williams passed away March 11, 2017, at his home in Fruitvale.  He was born Dec. 7, 1933, in Caddo Mills to I.N. and Linnie Mae McCormack Williams. He was a farmer in his early years and owned/operated Williams Lawn and Maintenance. He spent 35 years in Mesquite before moving to Fruitvale about 25 years ago, where he attended Round Flat Pentecostal Church and Riverside Mission Church for many years.  He worked for Sears for 23 years and had volunteered many years at the Denton State School.  He had a servant’s heart. He helped at Troy Suggs Funeral Home for several years, picked tomatoes with J. R. Hazel, substituted as custodian for Fruitvale ISD and was involved and supported all activities with his kids and grandkids.  He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Danny Joe Williams; sister, Flossie Vaughan; and brother, Don Williams.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Ruby Williams of Fruitvale; two sons, Jerry Lee Williams and wife, Tanis, of Fruitvale, and Eddie Williams and Victoria Parrish of Pottsboro; daughter, Peggy Jean Haverly and husband, John, of Eustace; two brothers, Willie E. Williams of Point and James Richard Williams and wife, Christine, of Garland; 13 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Melvadean Williams of Kaufman and Odie Nutt of Carthage; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers were Jamie Williams, Jon Williams, Timothy Williams, Kenneth Williams, John DuShane and Chuck Haverly.

Funeral services for Margaret Ann Weatherall, 80, Canton, were held Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at Hilliard Funeral Home with the Rev. Billy D. Johnson officiating and the Rev. Joe Turner and Rev. Dan Tarno assisting.

Burial was in Haven of Memories Cemetery. Mrs. Weatherall passed away on March 18, 2017 in Canton.

She was born Sept. 14, 1936, in the Tundra Community to the late Andrew Jackson Rowan and Bonnie Olivia McClellen Rowan.

She was a lifelong resident of Canton, where she attended Canton schools. She worked for Terrell State Hospital for 10 years and The Andrews Center in Canton for 10 years as well. She enjoyed cooking and working in her flower beds, as she had a green thumb and could grow just about anything.

She loved visiting and playing games with all of her friends and when she was no longer able to drive, she talked with them on the phone. For many years, she and her former classmates would meet once a month for lunch. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be missed by her loving family and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, Benard Weatherall, who passed away in 1994, after 35 years of marriage. She is also preceded in death by siblings, Billy Mac Rowan, Martha Joe Rowan and Toy Lea Morgan and a great-grandson, Jonathan Bailey.

Survivors include her children Joe Wright, Benard and Kathy Weatherall, Jeanne and Yogi Yarbrough, Martha Weatherall and Lea Ann and Rusty Massey, all of Canton; step-daughter, Marvone Land and husband, Ken, of Edgewood; one sister, Imogene Newton and husband, Edward, of Canton; grandchildren, Andy Wright (Jennifer Davis), Matt Wright (Brandi Burns-Little), Joshua Bailey (Angela Jones), Amber Myers (Randy Myers), Justin Massey (Jennifer Noah), Cheyenne Massey (Colt Patterson), Amy Bass, Lance Bass (Jennifer Bass) , Allyson Bailey (Andrew Thomas) and Terri Pinson; great-grandchildren, Laikyn Wright, Jaynie Wright, Dessa Bailey, Morgan Bailey, Avery Bailey, Rowan Myers, Jolie Bass, Layton Bass, Laynee Bass and Larry Pinson

Pallbearers were grandsons, Justin Massey, Joshua Bailey, Andy Wright, Matthew Wright, Colt Patterson and Randy Myers.

Honorary pallbearers will be Bryan Cole Young, Andrew Thomas, Eddie Newton, Tres Newton, Brian Newton, Jake Morgan, and Gregg McKnight.

The family would like to thank Corner Stone Hospice/Always Accurate Hospice, Jordan Health Care, Dr. John Turner and the staff of UT Health Northeast for caring for Margaret.

Funeral services for Mildred Bernice Bates, 87, Van, were held Friday, March 24, 2017 at Van Assembly of God Church with Ed Wisehart officiating. Burial was in Union Chapel Cemetery.
She passed away on March 20, 2017 in Tyler.
She was born June 27, 1929 in Van to the late Clinton Marion Freeman and Maudie Taylor Freeman. She had lived in the area all of her life, was a member of Van Assembly of God Church and enjoyed traveling. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Olan Bates, brother, Sonny Freeman and a sister, Lois Dean Freeman.
Survivors include her daughter, Melba Breedlove and her husband, James, of Van; four grandchildren, Deanna and Melvin Goss of Terrell, Danny and Stacey Breedlove of Atlanta, Walter and Becky Breedlove of Stafford, Va. and Amanda Breedlove of Van; eight great-grandchildren, Faith, Kandyce, Danielle, Haylee, Coleman, Anessa, Taylor and Gavan; and two great-great-grandchildren, Cason and Hadley.

Velma Lee Williams, 78, of Canton passed away Sunday, March 19, 2017, in Tyler.  She was born Sept. 9, 1938, in Dallas to William Henry and Martha Lee Rogers Brooks. 

She was one of the most generous people you would ever meet. She started dating Chester while they were in high school, which blossomed into a relationship that lasted over 60 years.  They were married in July, 1963.  She enjoyed keeping children while their parents worked, and shopping, especially for purses and shoes.

She is preceded in death by her parents, William and Martha Brooks.

She is survived by her husband, Chester Williams of Canton; four children, Tammy and Kenneth Acker of Lindale, Janet and Chris Martin of Aledo, Cathy Williams of Royse City and Michael Williams of Royse City; six grandchildren: Brett Williams, Christopher Martin, Arron Martin, Chelesy Williams, Victoria Williams and Elizabeth Williams; and two great-grandchildren: Karli and Lena.

Funeral services for Harris Z. “Buddy” Miller, 95, of Mineola were held Thursday, March 30, 2017, at Sand Springs Baptist Church near Mineola. Burial followed at White Rose Cemetery in Wills Point. Services were under the direction of Hiett’s LyBrand Funeral Home.

Harris Z. Miller was born on Dec. 25, 1921, in Wills Point, to parents, Charlie L. Miller and Ora B. Harris. He was raised in Wills Point where he attended and graduated from high school. He married Ophelia Rabe in 1942 and they lived in New Mexico raising their two sons before later divorcing. He served in the United States Army Air Corp. from 1942 to 1945 during WWII.  He got remarried to Iva Dell Lewis on Oct. 26, 1968. He worked as a Civil Service Air Mechanic at Holloman Air Force Base from 1951-1982. Following retirement, he enjoyed being a cattle rancher in Quitman. He and Iva later moved to Mineola to make their home in 2006. He was a member of the Sand Springs Baptist Church in Mineola.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Ora Miller; a brother, Bill Miller of Arizona and two sisters, Mary Ramsey of Wills Point and Daphine Hopkins of California.

He is survived by his wife, Iva Miller of Mineola; sons, “Chip” Richard Miller and wife, Jerry Fay, of Grand Saline and B.J. Miller of Tularosa, N.M.; step-children, Tommie Elaine Glock and husband, Charles, of Chaparral, N.M., Joe Burk Wilson of El Paso, Scott Wilson and wife, Mary Ellen, of Mississippi and Sally Ann Wood and husband, John, of El Paso; along with 15 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Visitation services for James “Jimmy” Winston Tonn, 89 of Wills Point were held Monday, March 20, 2017 at Hiett’s Lybrand Funeral Home in Wills Point.  A private graveside service at Grove Hill Memorial Park in Dallas followed.  Services were under the direction of Hiett’s Lybrand Funeral Home.

He was born to parents, William and Grace, and brother, Billy Tonn, in Dallas.  He passed away on March 17, 2017 at the age of 89 in Terrell.  Born and raised in Dallas where he attended school, he went on to serve in the United States Army and then returned home to receive a Bachelor and Master’s degree and teach for the remainder of his professional life.  Working for Texas Instruments, Commercial College, Trinity Valley Community College, Wills Point High School and various other academic institutions, he loved being an educator and was passionate, not only about the subject he was teaching but helping the student grasp that subject and reach his/her fullest potential. 

Above all, he was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend.  A true man of God with a servant’s heart, he never missed an opportunity to love, encourage and support those fortunate enough to be in his path.  And, when he wasn’t pouring into others, he was out on Lake Tawakoni catching his limit of fish with great ease and joy.

He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Grace Tonn; and, brother, Billy Tonn.  He is survived by his wife, Glenda Tonn, of Wills Point and his former wife, Shirley Tonn, of Wylie; daughters and son-in-laws, Vicki and Harry Vlasak of Wylie, Pam and Mike Ruwaldt of Plano, Susan and Jason Turner of Rockwall and Jill and Patrick Parish of Dallas; countless grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Private memorial service for Karen Robin Nelson, 56, of Mesquite, will be held at a later date.  Arrangements are under the direction of Allan Fuller Funeral Home in Wills Point.

She passed away Monday, March 27, 2017, in Balch Springs. 

Shen was born Dec. 18, 1960, in Dallas, the daughter of Eddie James Nelson and Doris Ann Shields Nelson.  She was raised in Farmers Branch, where she attended public school.  She lived in Wills Point prior to moving to Mesquite five years ago.  She enjoyed collecting arrow heads, fishing and just being outdoors.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Eddie and Doris Nelson; brother, Eddie Nelson, Jr. and a nephew, Austin Fields.

She is survived by husband, Mike Wills, of Mesquite; daughter, Jessica Wills, of Quinlan; two sisters, Debbie McClure and husband, Harold, of Caddo Mills and Donna Kimbro and husband, Jerry, of Point and one grandchild, Tryczik White.

Mary Louise Clemments Lockett was born Nov. 17, 1928 in Clinton, Okla. to the late William Josephus Clemments and Pearl Moore Clemments.  She moved to East Texas in 1991, formerly living in El Paso.  She was a nurse and talented china painter. 

She passed away at the age of 88 on March 26, 2017 in Van.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale Edward Lockett of Tyler.

Survivors include her two sons and daughters-in-law, Dale and Linda Lockett of Albuquerque, N.M. and Glen and Janet Lockett of Canton; four grandchildren, Dillon Lockett, Valerie Gable, Courtney Windt-Lockett and Megan Mullaly; six great-grandchildren, Pierce and August Gable, Laura and David Windt-Lockett, and Owen and Gavin Mullaly; and beloved cousin, Nancy Brownfield of Big Spring.

Services for Mike McBride, 69, of Canton were held Sunday, March 26, 2017, at Eubank Funeral Chapel in Canton with Bro. Craig Locke officiating.

He passed away Thursday, March 23, 2017, in Tyler.

He was born March 12, 1948, in Wills Point to Grady Wendell McBride and Amy Ruth Wade McBride.

He grew up in Wills Point and graduated from Wills Point High School in 1967. He was very active in sports. He played football, basketball, ran track and field throughout high school. As an adult, he was an avid golfer and enjoyed billiards. He married Ronda Thorn on July 2, 2002, and they moved to Canton in 2017. When he was not playing golf, he enjoyed riding his tractor and working on his house making any improvements he could. Mike loved his family and friends, especially his dogs, Peppy and Mitzie.

He is survived by his wife, Ronda McBride; son, Shawn and Robin McBride; daughter, Cara and Scott Calder; stepson, Brad Freisner; grandsons, Dalton McBride and Ryan McBride; brothers, Tony and Mary McBride and Pat and Penny McBride; nephew, Shannon McBride; and nieces: Chrissy Rabussa and Melissa Alvarado.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Grady and Amy McBride; and Mitzie.

Interment was at Haven of Memories in Canton.

Miles Lee King, 66, of Canton went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, March 19, 2017 at his residence.  Memorial services celebrating Miles’ life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at Whitton Church of Christ with Minister David Fretwell officiating.  Reception will be immediately following at the Whitton Community Center.

Miles was born April 6, 1950 in Cameron County, Texas.  He is the son of Joan King and the Late MD King.  As an Air Force family they lived near many bases in Texas throughout his youth.  He graduated from High School in Houston.  Miles married Bonnie Reeves on July 11, 1987 and they made their home in the Houston area.  He worked as an instrumentation engineer for several companies.  They moved to Canton in 2012 and enjoyed the quiet life of country living which helped to keep his M.S, symptoms at bay.  He loved and was exceedingly good at many things including competitive shooting, photography, scuba diving, wood working and farming.

He is loved and will be missed by his wife Bonnie King; mother, Joan King of Yukon, Okla.; daughters, Stephanie Mitchell and husband Justin of Victoria, Melanie Young and Meredith Kalbus of Texas; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five siblings; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and many friends.

Randall Kirkpatrick

Services for Randall "Randy" Kirkpatrick were held Saturday, April 1, 2017, at Hilliard Funeral Home with Ronnie Daniell officeating.  A graveside service was held at Colfax Cemetery, Van Zandt County.  He was born Jan. 19, 1949, in El Campo, Wharton County.  He served in the U.S. Army from 1966-1969 as a medical specialist in Germany during the Vietnam War.  He was a member of Sand Flat Missionary Baptist Church.

He married Imogene Euvalda Dickerson on Feb. 22, 1974, at Forney Missionary Baptist Church in Forney, Kaufman County.  He retired as a deputy sheriff from Rains County Sheriff's Department on April 30, 2013, after also working for Van Zandt County Sheriff, Wood County Sheriff and Alba Police Department.  He began serving in law enforcement in 1991.  He held a Master Peace Officer's license and enjoyed working in law enforcement.  However, he worked at many different jobs.  He worked for Emory, Throckmorton, Garland, Mesquite and Sanger water departments.  He drove long haul and local delivery, as well as working for a funeral home, convenience store, manufacturing, as a census taker, apartment maintenance, street sweeper, club bouncer and Santa Claus.

He passed away at the age of 68 on Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at his home in Mineola.  He was preceded in death by his father, John Kay Anderson Kirkpatrick; his mother, Golda Mayers Kirkpatrick Hardwick; sister, Shirley Kay Kirkpatrick; half-brothers, Larry Bob Barton and Johnny Dale Kirkpatrick; and half-sister, Patricia Barton Rutledge.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Imogene Kirkpatrick; daughters, Katrina Kay Mattingly and husband, James of Canton, and Lisa Lynn Faeta and husband, Anthony of Mineola and son, John Richard Kirkpatrick.  His grandchildren are Mikayla Ann Karr, Keith Russell Kirkpatrick, Trevor Lee Baetz, Caleb Ryan Swierk, Alexander Blake Swierk, Kaylee Samantha Swierk and Samantha Ann King.  He is also survived by half-brothers, Howard Ray Kirkpatrick and Alex Theodore Kirkpatrick; and step-sister, Mary Derene Pabst; sisters-in-law, Leona Fay Bowshier, Martha Nell Skinner and Patricia Dickerson; and brothers-in-law, Thomas Dickerson and Charles Dickerson.  Also surviving are many cousins, nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held for Theo “Virginia” Hughes on Friday, March 31, 2017, at Oak Hill Cemetery in Edgewood. A reception was held afterwards at Cheatham Memorial United Methodist Church. Services were under the direction of Hiett-LyBrand Funeral Home.

She passed away March 20, 2017.

Theo Virginia Hughes was born July 26, 1925, in Edgewood.

Memorial services for Donna Usher, 88, of Richardson will be held on April 30, 2017, in Richardson.  Arrangements are under the direction of Allan Fuller Funeral Home in Wills Point.

She passed away peacefully surrounded by her family Friday, March 24, 2017, at Medical Center of Plano. 

She was born Dec. 15, 1928, in Clearfield, Penn. to Alton Davis and Ruth McMurray Davis.  She was raised in Clearfield and graduated from Clearfield High School.  On April 24, 1948, she married Billy Joe Usher in Clearfield.  While she sometimes worked outside her home, she is best remembered as a loving homemaker.  She enjoyed knitting, making decorative candles and cooking pies.  She lived in Jacksboro prior to moving to Richardson in 1992.  She was a member of the First Methodist Church in Richardson. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alton and Ruth Davis and two sisters, Dolores Watson and Catherine Fullerton.

Joey Usher, and Danny Usher and wife, Katie; great-granddaughter, Keira Grace Usher; and beloved dog, Lady.

Funeral services for Elizabeth M. Burk, 94, of Denton, formerly of Edgewood, were held Friday, April 7, 2017, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Denton under the direction of Hiett’s LyBrand Funeral Home. Burial followed at Rose Lawn Memorial Park. Ms. Burk passed away Sunday, April 2, 2017.
